UPI Hits New Record: 21.63 Billion Monthly Transactions Recorded in December 2025
The month of December saw a significant rebound in digital payments following a slight moderation in November. Driven by year-end festivities, travel, and retail spending, the transaction volume grew by nearly 6% month-on-month from November’s 20.47 billion. On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the platform registered a robust 29% growth in volume.
In value terms, UPI transactions reached an all-time high of ₹27.97 trillion (approximately $28 lakh crore$), up from ₹26.32 trillion in November. This represents a 20% increase compared to December 2024.
Daily Activity and Ticket Size
The daily average for December 2025 also set new benchmarks:
Average Daily Transactions: 698 million (up from 682 million in November).
Average Daily Value: ₹90,217 crore.
Average Ticket Size (ATS): Settled at approximately ₹1,293.
The consistent decline in the average ticket size highlights a structural shift in consumer behavior. UPI is no longer just for large transfers; it has become the primary tool for micro-transactions, including groceries, transit, and street-side commerce.
2025: A Blockbuster Year for Digital India
The December figures capped off a record-breaking calendar year. For the full year of 2025, UPI processed approximately 228.3 billion transactions worth nearly ₹300 trillion.
| Metric (Dec 2025) | Figure | Growth (YoY) |
| Transaction Volume | 21.63 Billion | 29% |
| Transaction Value | ₹27.97 Trillion | 20% |
| Daily Avg Volume | 698 Million | - |
| Avg Ticket Size | ₹1,293 | - |
Beyond UPI: Other Digital Channels
While UPI dominated the spotlight, other NPCI-operated platforms also saw growth:
IMPS (Immediate Payment Service): Processed 380 million transactions worth ₹6.62 trillion.
FASTag: Transactions rose to 384 million, aided by heavy year-end holiday travel.
AePS (Aadhaar Enabled Payment System): Saw a slight sequential dip to 95 million transactions, though it remains a critical pillar for rural financial inclusion.
Looking Ahead to 2026
Industry experts attribute this momentum to the deepening penetration of QR codes in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. With the recent launch of features like UPI Circle (delegate payments to family) and UPI Lite (with auto top-up), the ecosystem is expected to push toward the milestone of 1 billion transactions per day by 2027.
